Halloween Clean-Up Tips for Regina Homes, Inside and Out
Halloween in Regina has a particular hazard: the weather can turn between the carving and the trick-or-treating, so you get the usual mess plus whatever the yard contributes. Every job below is easier the same night or the next morning, because anything left outside risks being under snow until April.
Pumpkin Carving Without the Aftermath
Most carving mess is avoidable with a bit of setup.
Carve on a plastic tablecloth, an old sheet or a few layers of newspaper, and work over a big bowl rather than the table. Keep pulp and seeds in that bowl from the start — once they're spread across a surface, you're scraping.
Don't put pumpkin pulp down the sink. The stringy fibre is what a drain or disposal handles worst. Bag it, or use the green cart.
Pumpkin on a hard surface: scrape the solids off with a flat edge, then wipe with warm soapy water. It dries to a hard film fast, so wipe while it's wet.
Pumpkin on carpet or fabric: lift the solids with a spoon rather than pressing them in. Blot with a cloth dampened in cool water, working from the outside in, changing to a clean section often. Blot dry rather than rubbing.
The front step: a jack-o'-lantern left out past Halloween here will freeze, thaw and collapse into a slick patch on the concrete. Get it to the cart within a day or two, and scrub the residue off before the first hard freeze — it won't come off once it's frozen in.
Candy, and What It Does to Floors
Candy makes two kinds of mess, and they need opposite treatment.
Sticky and sugary — juice, caramel, melted suckers. Warm water is all most of it needs. Lift the solid part, then work a cloth dampened with warm water over the spot, re-wetting as the sugar dissolves. Patience beats pressure.
Chocolate — the opposite. Let it harden, or chill it with an ice cube in a bag, then break it off and lift the pieces away. Wiping soft chocolate out of carpet pushes it into the fibres. Once the solids are out, blot with cool water and blot dry.
Gum — same principle: chill it hard, work it off gently, blot the residue.
On carpet, blot and never rub, and never use hot water on a sugary mark. Test any product in an out-of-the-way spot, and follow the flooring or fabric manufacturer's recommendations over any general advice.
Then sweep for wrappers. They end up under the couch, in coat pockets and down the side of the car seat — the ones you miss now you'll find in March.
Face Paint and Costume Makeup
Costume makeup is usually oil- or wax-based, which is why water alone does little.
On skin, a gentle makeup remover or mild cleanser works better than scrubbing. On fabric, lift the excess with a dull edge, then treat the mark with a stain remover suited to the fabric and launder per the garment's label. Check the mark is gone before it goes in the dryer — heat sets what's left.
On a bathroom counter or sink, wipe the pigment before it dries and expect a second pass. Do the taps and mirror too — that's where the handprints are.
Fake blood and coloured hairspray catch people out, because they transfer to towels, bedding and pale upholstery hours later. Change the pillowcase, and keep costumes off the good furniture.
The Entry Takes the Worst of It
A hundred kids' worth of boots plus a late-October Saskatchewan yard is a lot for one doormat.
Set up first: a coarse scraper mat outside, a long absorbent mat inside, a boot tray with a raised lip. Keep a broom by the door and sweep the step partway through the evening.
Afterwards, sweep then mop the entry, wash the mats, and rinse the boot tray. If there was mud or wet snow, check the floor a metre or two further in than you'd expect — that's where it ends up.
Decorations, and Getting Them In Before the Snow
Decorations left out past the first real snowfall tend to stay out. Give yourself a weekend to pull them in.
- Wipe everything before it's boxed — dirt and moisture stored all year is what ruins decorations
- Dry anything wet completely first; a damp decoration in a sealed box comes out mouldy
- Lidded plastic bins, not cardboard, especially on a basement or garage floor
- Coil light strings loosely, ends accessible
- Walk the yard for cobwebs, wrappers, tape and plastic before the snow hides them
- Check window glass and door frames for tape residue and lift it while it's fresh — a warm damp cloth usually does it
After a Halloween Party
The order that saves time: garbage and recycling out, dishes in and the dishwasher started, surfaces, then floors. Deal with any carpet spill tonight even if everything else waits — that's the one that gets harder overnight.
Where a Professional Clean Fits
If the house took a beating, a deep clean is the right reset — also the choice for a first visit or a 30-day gap. Dishes ($25) is a popular add-on after hosting, and this is a good week to book if the holiday season is next on your calendar. Recurring visits save 10% every 2 weeks or 5% every 4.
Pricing is flat-rate, not hourly, from $120 + GST for a 1 bed / 1 bath, plus $30 per extra bathroom. Get your price in about 30 seconds.
